Wal-Mart's Disregard for Workers and Shoppers Results in Tragedy (12/1/08)
At 6:03 a.m. on Friday, just an hour and three minutes after the doors of the Valley Stream Wal-Mart in Long Island, New York, opened, temporary worker Jdimytai Damour was pronounced dead. The 34-year old was killed by injuries sustained by stampeding customers at the store's entrance on November 28, "Black Friday."
According to RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum, the tragedy is a sign of Wal-Mart's disregard for the safety of its workers and shoppers in favor of hype and profits.
"Damour was there to do his job, but was doomed by Wal-Mart's failure to take proper precautions in the face of obvious danger," Appelbaum said.
"Time and again Wal-Mart has shown complete disregard for its workers, shoppers and the communities where they operate. It's outrageous that Wal-Mart would be allowed to operate in such an irresponsible manner. What more needs to occur before Wal-Mart learns to put people before profits?"
