A Tough Time for Retail Workers

With their contract set to expire in May, unionized workers rallied outside Bloomingdale's on Tuesday. For spirit, they brought a band, an inflatable rat, and a number of local elected officials.

But months of bad headlines for the retail industry make this is a difficult time for workers to try to wring concessions from their employer.

Earlier this year, Bloomingdale’s parent company, Macy’s announced it would close 68 stores around the country. And after years of impressive growth in retail jobs in New York City, last year was the first time since 2010 in which these jobs declined.
